Hi, I’m Nadine! I’m a Canadian writer and editor who writes fictional prose and screenplays based within the genres of magic realism, gothic, and horror (usually). I’m the current chair at Forest Publications in Scotland, Managing Editor at Radical Bookshop in Canada, and the creator of the blog Unimpressed (2019-2023).
A storyteller for as long as I can remember, I’ve always loved novels and film. Both medias present different and exciting possibilities for telling an engrossing story, and I enjoy playing with both forms.
My work has appeared in publications in Canada, the UK, and the USA, most recently appearing in Shadows on the Stage (2025), The Anti-Misogyny Club (2025), and Middleground (2024). I’ve been a featured scriptwriter for FEM Script Lab and Firecracker Department’s Script Reading Series, and in 2020, my project Cerebral was a top 10 finalist for WIFT Vancouver’s From Our Dark Side Competition. In 2019, I was shortlisted for the CFC Writers’ Lab cohort with my script Leonarda, which also went on to place in the 2021 ISA Action & Adventure Genre Busting Screenplay Competition. In 2016, I wrote and co-directed Bad Investment, a dramedy short film.
I hold a masters degree in Creative Writing from the University of Edinburgh. While writing my dissertation, I received university funding to conduct research in Mexico City for my project, a novel inspired by Mexican folklore. I also hold an undergraduate degree in Cinema and Media Studies from York University. In 2011, the university awarded me with the N.A. Taylor Prize for Script Writing for my project The Auction.
In addition to my writing work, I have over a decade of experience in the business, labour, and festival sectors of the Canadian film industry. I also enjoy being part of creative communities that champion women’s voices and showcase their work. From 2020-2021 I was co-head of the Firecracker Writing Department, where I led weekly writing burst sessions online for writers from around the world to come together and write. I started and ran Firecracker Department’s first Spring 2021 Writing Challenge, a short story competition. Prior to Firecracker Department, I was a co-founder of Bloody Mary Film Festival, an annual film festival that highlighted the works of Canadian female genre filmmakers. From 2016-2019 I was Festival Programmer and Director of Web Content. I am passionate about supporting great storytelling in all forms.
Currently I’m based in Scotland, where I’m hard at work adapting one of my feature screenplays into a novel. I’m a massive fan of dogs, chai lattes, and Madonna.
